Experience life in DDR

With the following programme you will have your students engaged as they do the exploring instead of you talking.

One City, Two Worlds Berlin during the Wall

Tales of Division, Escape, and Life in a Divided Germany

Experience Berlin's deep and complex history, marked by the shadow of the wall. This tour dives into the personal stories of division and hope that defined life in a divided Germany. The wall was not just a physical structure; it became a symbol of the many fates and dreams that were shattered and torn apart.

Bernauer Straße is a significant street in Berlin, serving as a powerful symbol of the Cold War's division of the city. A large section of the old wall still stands here, making it easy to imagine how life was behind the wall. The street is filled with historical traces that tell the tales of numerous escape attempts and the tragic family separations that occurred under the regime of the wall.

What It Involves

You will be divided into eight groups, with each group focusing on a specific aspect of the wall's impact, such as divided families, Stasi surveillance, secret escape routes, or the story of Schumann’s iconic jump. Your task is to explore these topics and bring to life the human stories behind them.

By sharing personal experiences and reflections from the past, you will gain a deeper understanding of the emotional costs of the wall's construction and fall. You will also discover how hope and courage drove people to fight for freedom and reunification.

After your discoveries, you will present your findings to the rest of the group, creating a collective reflection on the significance of these fateful histories.

Purpose

The mission of this tour is to demonstrate that stories from the past are not only educational but also relevant today. While physical barriers have been removed, the memories live on. In a time when the world remains divided in many ways, it is important to understand what happened back then so we can find inspiration to bridge today's divides.
